🏛️ THE THEATRE
The building opened in 1902 as part of Manchester’s vibrant theatre scene and has enjoyed a remarkable history spanning theatre, cinema, television, radio and live performance.
Over the decades it has hosted legendary artists and productions, including broadcasts featuring Les Dawson, Ken Dodd, Roy Castle and many others. In 1962, The Beatles recorded their first BBC radio appearance here for Teenager’s Turn – Here We Go.
The venue later became home to the celebrated Nia Centre for Black Arts, opened by the legendary Nina Simone and hosting artists including Hugh Masekela, Ziggy Marley, Fela Kuti, Talawa Theatre Company and many more.
Today, Niamos continues this rich cultural legacy as a community-owned arts centre, celebrating creativity, diversity, heritage and wellbeing through performance, music, dance and community engagement.
